The famous artist SM Sultan's 96th birth anniversary will be celebrated today at his home in the district of Masumdia-Kurigram.

On the day, SM Sultan Foundation and Narail district administration have planned different programmes at Sultan Smriti Sangrahasala in the morning.

The programmes include Quran Khwani at Sultan's tomb, Doa-Mahfil, paying homage to the legendary artist by putting wreaths on Sultan Smriti Sangrahasala.

Narail Deputy Commissioner and Sultan Foundation President Anjuman Ara said that all arrangements have been made to observe the iconic anniversary of the birth of the musician, preserving social distance and observing the laws of hygiene.

Sultan hit the headlines of the art world even before he was known to his homeland 's people as a painter. Leading a rather quiet life away from the madding crowd in his community, the selfless poet filled much of his time in drawing and art brush.

His very basic yet deeply conceptual painting, unveiled in nature and in the citizens of Bangladesh, has become the primary source of inspiration for the young painter generation.

His works of art were displayed in Simla in India in 1946, in Lahore and Karachi in 1948-49, and drawings were shown in New York , Chicago, London and Michigan University in 1959, well before the Shilpakala Academy in Bangladesh in 1976.

In 1950, he joined the International Conference of Painters in America as a delegate of the Pakistani government at that time.

SM Sultan, a legendary artist of Bangladesh, won Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993.

He was entitled the “Man of Asia” in 1982 by Cambridge University and Bangladesh government named him “a resident of an artist” in 1984.

Sultan was born to a poor family at Masumdia area in Narail town on 10 August 1924.

He died in Jessore Combined Military Hospital on October 10, 1994. He was buried in the yard of his own house in the Masumdia-Kurigram area of the Narail Municipality.
