BJRI-CVASU Jointly Sequence Coronavirus Genome

Bangladesh Jute Research Institute and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) have jointly sequenced the complete genome of a SARS-CoV-2 sample from Bangladesh.

Following the instruction of Agriculture Minister Dr. Md Abdur Razzak, Jute Genome Project of the institute and the CVASU jointly completed the sequencing of seven samples of the coronavirus, said a press release of Agriculture Ministry.

The genome data has been submitted to the GISAID database as well as uploaded on the website of the institute.

Analysis of the revealed genome data shows that the sequences are similar to those in Saudi Arabia, Russia, Australia and the United States.

Mutations have been observed for one genome in seven places, for two genomes in five places and for four genomes in four places.

Further analysis of the unveiled genome sequence is currently underway. The uncovered sequence information is expected to be helpful in designing and evaluating diagnostic tests and identifying potential alternative approaches to curbing the ongoing outbreak.
