Bangladesh to Beat Coronavirus thru United Efforts: Quader

Awami League Secretary-General and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader today hoped that Bangladesh will beat the deadly coronavirus through united efforts.

"Bangladesh is at risk (of coronavirus) but there is still such a condition to be developed that we should be worried," he told reporters after paying homage to former President Zillur Rahman's grave here at the Banani graveyard.

Quader said a total of 18 people in the country have been infected with coronavirus so far (currently coronavirus reported cases at 20), although one person died. "We're still at danger because the novel epidemic of coronavirus has been declared a pandemic," he added.

Terming coronavirus outbreaks a global issue, the minister of road transport and bridges said Bangladesh is equipped under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheik Hasina to fight the deadly virus.

“We do believe we would be able to defeat the coronavirus concertedly…how big enemy it is,” he said.

In reaction to a question regarding the BNP's demand for by-polls to be postponed, Quader said it's hard to grasp what BNP wants as it still searches for politics in all.

Deferring the upcoming by-polls is under the Election Commission's (EC) authority, he said adding, "The EC is an autonomous entity and it can take decisions in this regard."

Recalling former President Zillur Rahman's contribution to the nation and its history, the AL secretary-general said he (Zillur Rahman) was a respected and brave political figure who had played an important role in the country's liberation war.

He said the former president was a close associate of Bangabandhu Nation Father Sheik Mujibur Rahman.

“Late Zillur Rahman, as a courageous political leader, had played a crucial role during the crisis period of the party (Bangladesh Awami League),” he added.

Quader said Zillur Rahman had run the party during the crisis by uniting the leaders and activities.

He said that it is amazing the courageous role Zillur Rahman played while Prime Minister Sheik Hasina was in prison.
