BNP Opposes Government’s Move to Reopen

On Friday, BNP strongly opposed the government's move to re-open the offices and resume public transport services, saying that it will put the nation at risk of a serious coronavirus outbreak.

"Reopening the offices, the courts, and resuming the public transport services means embracing the messenger of death. If the government is to enforce the lockdown and keep people at home or in isolation, it will open the windows and doors inviting coronary fatalities," said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He made remarks at a virtual news conference on Friday noon at BNP's central office in Nayapaltan.

The BNP leader warned that the government's "relaxed course" to contain the deadly coronavirus will only present a danger to the citizens of the country.

With the withdrawal of the lockdown, he feared that the jails and Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar may become the hotspots for the virus transmission.

The BNP leader also said that the government had removed the lockout by dismissing the views of local and foreign experts just because of its obstinacy.

He said the destitute were crying out for assistance all over, and even more, were suffering and going through a tough period due to lack of care.

In the midst of the epidemic of the virus, Rizvi said the government is arresting BNP members and activists in 'false' cases and imposing their disappearance.

He said there is a spree of cases filed under the Digital Security Act against those who talk about the government's failure on social media in an attempt to suppress people and their freedom of expression.

Rizvi said around 500 journalists and online activists have been arrested over the last two months only for expressing their different opinions against the government.
