Shamim Iskander, former prime minister's younger brother, and BNP leader Khaleda Zia, thanked the government for their decision to free her.

"We are very happy. We got to know about the decision [of her release] on tv, "he said on Tuesday (Mar 24).

He said members of her family had requested the government to let them speak with Khaleda on Mar 7.

"We're already in touch with prosecutors and key party members to discuss our next moves," he said.

BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is scheduled to brief the press later in the day regarding the progress.

The government decided to free BNP Leader Khaleda Zia from prison on conditions, lifting her sentence orders for six months.

Minister of Policy, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq made the declaration at a press conference held Tuesday at his Dhaka office in Gulshan.

The conditions include that Khaleda Zia will receive treatment staying at her home in Dhaka and cannot leave the country, the minister said.

The BNP chairperson has been in prison since she was arrested on Feb 8, 2018 in the graft case of Zia Orphanage Trust. She was arrested in the same year of another graft trial, but her faction says all trials are politically motivated.

Khaleda has been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital since Apr 1, 2019.
