Cyclone Amphan has begun to make landfall in West Bengal as high winds and heavy rains have hit the eastern coast of India.

The Indian Meteorological Department said the landfall process began at 2:30 p.m. (local time) Wednesday and is expected to continue for about four hours, Indian news broadcaster NDTV reports.

The storm lost some of its strength and was downgraded from a super-cyclone to a "highly intense cyclone hurricane" on Tuesday as it moved to the Indian coast, according to the Indian Met Office.

It was situated in the northwest of the Bay of Bengal, just 95 km from the town of Digha, West Bengal, until it began to land.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department also provided the highest warning signal at the country's key ports as the cyclone descends on the coast.

According to the Met Office, the cyclone is expected to cut its way through Bangladesh near the Sundarbans on Wednesday evening.
