Apple has begun to assemble the high-end iPhone 11 smartphone at its Foxconn plant in Chennai , India.

The tech giant aims to step-by-step boost demand. Units from Chennai may also be exported to other markets, reports The Economic Times.

Apple is also expected to manufacture the latest SE 2020 iPhone at its Wistron factory in Bengaluru. If the report is to be believed, this is the first time that Apple has produced one of India's most premium handsets.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal in a tweet described the move as a “Big boost to Make in India!”.

It is worth mentioning that Apple has slowly expanded its production in India. The business is currently producing Apple iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and iPhone XR in India.

In May of this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that producing in India was one of the company's top priorities.

"I think India is a very important market in the long-term. It's a challenging market in the short-term. But we're learning a lot. We have started manufacturing there which is very important to be able to serve the market in a reasonable way. And we're growing that capability there," Cook had said.

The move is expected to help Apple reduce its reliance on China in the longer term. Besides India, Apple still found Vietnam to be one of its main production hubs.

Apple's switch to iPhone 11 manufacturing in India could also be based on the Indian government's decision to relax some of the regulations for its PLI (Manufacturing Linked Incentive) program.

According to reports, the government is also in negotiations with Pegatron, one of Apple's biggest production partners, to move some of its manufacturing units to India.
