At least 17 people were killed in a powerful car bomb explosion in Afghanistan's Logar province.

The blast happened on the eve of a ceasefire announced by the Taliban during the Eid Festival.

The Taliban denied blame for the assault although the Islamic State has not yet spoken.

The attack was suspected to have been carried out by a suicide bomber, Dedar Lawang, spokesperson for Logar 's governor, told the AFP news agency.

The explosion occurred near the governor's office, where a number of people were shopping for the festival, BBC said.

The Taliban and Afghan Governments have settled to a three-day truce beginning to Friday, the first day of Eid.

There are hopes of a permanent truce but peace talks have been delayed due to prisoner exchanges.
