Cyclone Remal: Bangladesh And West Bengal Coast Brace For A Hit

The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further and turn into a deep depression by this evening, Friday (May 24). According to the weather office, it may develop into Cyclone ‘Remal’ by tomorrow noon, Saturday (May 25).

In a special weather bulletin issued this afternoon, Friday (May 24), the met office provided this update.

The bulletin stated that the low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has moved north-eastwards and remains in the same region.

It further mentioned that Cyclone ‘Remal’ might hit the coast on Sunday (May 26). The low-pressure area has intensified into a depression and is expected to turn into a deep depression by this evening. Subsequently, it might develop into a cyclone and hit the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh and the West Bengal coast of India on Sunday.

As of noon on Friday, it was located 805 kilometers southwest of Chattogram port, 740 kilometers southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 765 kilometers south of Mongla port, and 730 kilometers south of Payra port. It is expected to move further north-eastwards and intensify.

The bulletin also mentioned that within 44 kilometers of the depression center, the maximum sustained wind speed is 40 kilometers per hour, rising up to 50 kilometers per hour in gusts or squalls. The sea around the depression center is moderately rough.

Given this situation, the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal number 1. All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to proceed with caution near the coast until further notice and not to venture into the deep sea.
