‘Remal’ Weakens After Crossing Coastal Areas

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Cyclone Remal’ over Koyra, Khulna moved northwards has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and further weakened into a “land deep depression” over Jashore and its adjoining area. It may move northeastwards further and weaken into a “land depression” by giving precipitation (rainfall) gradually, informed special weather bulletin no. 19, signed by Meteorologist Bazlur Rasid, issued on Monday (May 27). 

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the country’s Met Office, said in the bulletin that Payra and Mongla seaports have been advised to lower danger signal no. 10 and hoisted local cautionary signal no. 3. Besides, maritime ports of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram have been advised to lower danger signal no. 9 and hoisted local cautionary signal no. 3.

Meanwhile, the inland riverports in the coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokati, Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali and their nearby islands and chars will be covered under warning signal no 2.

Besides, the inland riverports in the coastal districts of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur and their outlying islands and chars will also be covered under warning signal no 2.

Due to the strong cyclone’s frontal part and excess pressure difference, the coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokati, Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and their nearby islands and low lying areas of Char may inundate by wind-driven tides greater than 8-12 feet above normal tides.

Heavy (44-88 mm/24 hours) to very heavy (89 mm/24 hours) rains with gusty/squally winds may occur in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions under the influence of the cyclonic storm. Landslides may occur in hilly areas of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Chattogram due to heavy rains.
