A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal turned into a depression on Friday night (December 20), bringing rainfall to southern parts of the country. The weather office has issued a signal number 1 for all maritime ports.

This information was released in a special weather bulletin on Saturday (December 21).

According to the bulletin, the depression, which formed in the western-central Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas, has moved northeast and is currently located at 13.8°N latitude and 84.1°E longitude.

As of 6 AM today, the depression was located 1,265 kilometers southwest of Chattogram Port, 1,220 kilometers southwest of Cox's Bazar Port, 1,140 kilometers southwest of Mongla Port, and 1,140 kilometers southwest of Payra Port. It is expected to continue moving in a north-northeast direction.

The maximum sustained wind speed near the center of the depression is 40 kilometers per hour, which may increase to 50 kilometers per hour as gusty or squally winds. The sea remains rough near the depression's center.

The weather office has advised all maritime ports—Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra—to hoist signal number 1.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay of Bengal and deep sea are advised to stay close to the shore and exercise caution until further notice. They are also instructed not to venture into the deep sea.

Meteorologist Shahinul Islam mentioned that the depression is not expected to intensify into a deep depression. However, its impact may cause the signal to rise to number 3.
