Bangla New Year Celebrated in JU with Colorful Festivities

Pohela Boishakh (first day of Bangla new year-1429) has been celebrated at Jahangirnagar University (JU) with colorful festivities. On the occasion of the day, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurul Alam, who is currently in charge of the Vice-Chancellor's routine, exchanged New Year's greetings with the teachers, officials, staff and students at the University Club.

Then at ten o'clock in the morning, the procession started in front of the business faculty. The procession passed through Paribahan Chattar, Shaheed Minar at the foot of Amar Ekushey, and ended with a short speech by the Vice-Chancellor.

Briefing the audience, the Vice-Chancellor said that the Bengali New Year festival is an integral part of the Bengali nation. This festival has enriched the Bengali culture. The Mangal Shobhajatra (procession) of Pohela Boishakh is now a part of world heritage. The present government is giving special incentives by providing allowances to preserve this tradition and multiply the festival of Pohela Boishakh only.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University Prof. Sheikh Mohammad Manjurul Haque, Treasurer Prof. Dr. Rasheda Akhter, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Prof. Dr. Mozammel Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Prof. Dr. Ajit Kumar Majumder, Acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz, Provost Committee Chairman Prof. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Director of Student-Teacher Center Prof. Dr. Alamgir Kabir, and others also were present on the occasion.  

According to Bengali folklore, a portrait of a peacock and a snake as a symbol of eradication of evil and a symbolic image of a fish as a symbol of fertility have found a place in this year's Mangal Shobhajatra, in order to prevent a recurrence of the Covid-19 situation.

The Department of Drama and Drama also conducts cultural programs on the Mrita Mancha in front of the old Kala Bhaban at 10.45 am. At eleven o'clock in the afternoon, a cultural program was organized by the Bangla Department on Mahua Chattar and at three and a half o'clock in the seminar room of Zahir Raihan Auditorium, a joint program of the Student-Teacher Center and Student Welfare and Counseling Center was performed. On the occasion of the day, different faculties and departments organize different types of events separately.
