Man Dies After Alleged Beating By DU Students

A man died early today after allegedly being beaten by a group of students from Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at Dhaka University. 

The incident occurred last night when the students suspected the deceased, identified as Tofazzal, of stealing mobile phones from their dormitory. According to Prof. Shah Md Masum, the provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, Tofazzal was confined and beaten inside the hall.

Following the assault, the hall authorities handed Tofazzal over to the university's proctorial team. Instead of taking him directly to the hospital, the team first brought him to Shahbagh Police Station. After consulting with the police, he was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Tofazzal was declared dead around 12:45 am, according to a medical report, as confirmed by Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed. He stated that the hall provost has been instructed to submit a report on the incident by this evening, and immediate action will be taken. The university plans to file a case with Shahbagh Police Station, and those responsible will be punished according to university regulations.

An official from Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall mentioned that the attack arose from allegations of mobile phones being snatched while students were playing in the hall. Tofazzal was detained and severely beaten by the students. During his confinement, he was given food amidst the beatings, and photos and videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahabuddin Shaheen noted that the proctorial team arrived around 11:45 pm with the injured man but did not file any formal allegations against him. He advised them to take the injured person to the hospital immediately.
