The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has strongly denounced the mob killings that occurred on the campuses of Jahangirnagar University and Dhaka University, resulting in two fatalities.
“These tragic events highlight a profound disrespect for fundamental human rights and principles,” the organization stated in a media release.
The group called for the immediate prosecution of those responsible and urged the interim government, students, and citizens to take decisive action against extrajudicial killings, torture, and mob justice, while promoting a culture of social resistance.
It pointed out that the alarming occurrences of extrajudicial killings and torture over the past 15 years indicate a serious weakness in the country's judicial system and the rule of law.
The movement emphasized the necessity of a student-led uprising to address these issues, asserting that establishing the rule of law and protecting human rights in "New Bangladesh" are essential goals.
Shamim Ahmed, a former leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Jahangirnagar University, died after being assaulted by students on campus last night, according to police reports.
Earlier today, another man died after being beaten by a group of students from Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at Dhaka University.
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is the organization that led the quota reform protests in July and August.
