In response to government party behavior against the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement and allegations of involvement in actions contrary to the spirit of popular uprisings, 13 coordinators and 4 co-coordinators from Jahangirnagar University (JU) have resigned.
This information was shared at a press conference held today, Thursday, at 5 PM in the conference room of the university's Teacher-Student Center (TSC).
The resigning coordinators include Abdur Rashid Jitu, Rudra Muhammad Safiullah, Hasib Jaman, Zahidul Islam Imon, Zahidul Islam, Fahmida Faiza, Rokaiya Jannat Jhalok, Mishu Khatun, Rafid Hasan Rajon, Hasanur Rahman Suman, Abdul Hai Swapan, Nasim Al Tariq, and Oindrila Mojumdar. Among them, Abdur Rashid Jitu also served as the central coordinator.
The co-coordinators who resigned are Zia Uddin Ayan, Tanzim Ahmed, Zahidul Islam Bappi, and Saidul Islam.
In a written statement at the press conference, Abdur Rashid Jitu stated that the quota reform movement, which began under the banner of the anti-discrimination student movement, later transformed into an anti-fascist movement based on a nine-point agenda. Consequently, an interim government was formed following the fall of fascism. However, in this nine-point agenda, demands such as banning party-affiliated student politics, justice for those involved in the July killings, and compensation for the injured and affected have been largely ignored by the anti-discrimination student movement. He noted that this movement has been acting similarly to a government-affiliated student organization.
Additionally, Jitu criticized the failure to include participants from all levels of the movement under a unified banner and to ensure representation from various universities. He argued that this has obscured the history of participation from all professions, levels, and political affiliations in the ongoing movement. Therefore, he believes that this banner should be dissolved as soon as possible.
Jitu further remarked that certain coordinators from JU's anti-discrimination student movement have demonstrated an inability to represent the university nationally, exhibited discriminatory behavior towards comrades, and have failed to unite in response to the incident involving former Chhatra League leader and criminal Shamim Mollah, who died in police custody following a public beating on September 18. As a result of these issues, they have decided to resign from the coordinating council.
