Abrar murder: Two suspects on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed two accused on five-day remand each in a case filed over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharafuzzaman Ansary passed the order on Friday, after Detective Branch (DB) of Police Inspector Muhammad Wahidud Zaman, also the investigation officer of the case produced the accused before the court with a plea of 10-day remand for each.

The accused placed on remand are Amit Saha and Hosssain Mohhammad Toha. The court has received the first information report (FIR) of the murder case and ordered police to submit a report on the progress of the case on November 13.

Amit Saha is a student of the civil engineering department while Toha studies in the mechanical engineering department of Buet.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Dhaka court also placed 10 accused on a five-day remand each.

Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday.

Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.  

Meanwhile, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.

Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder.

Abrar’s death sparked protests across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.

As of Friday, 17 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
