Save the Children celebrates 30 years of UNCRC

Save the Children in Bangladesh on Sunday celebrated the 30 years of the UNCRC - United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - by introducing some child-friendly publications and a discussion.

Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury was present as the chief guest at the event held at CIRDAP in the city. 

Save the Children has published a child-friendly poster jointly with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Bangladesh Shishu Academy based on UNCRC articles.

Unveiling the poster, Mohibul Hasan said the government has taken numerous initiatives such as the distribution of new books and publication of Braille system books. 

"We want to make sure all the rights described in the UNCRC. We hope it’ll be achieved through a series of our efforts," he said.

Women and Children Affairs additional secretary Md Rafiqul Islam said ensuring proper physical and mental development, education and sports environment for children are much needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Zahara Tuss Meher, the general secretary of the Central Committee of the National Children's Task Force, led the program. 

She said the government is sincere to protect children and protect their rights. "I hope these initiatives will continue in the future.”

Abdulla Al Mamun, Director of the Child Rights Governance and Child Protection Sector, Save the Children in Bangladesh, presented a paper at the program.

He highlighted Bangladesh’s progress and future plans in effecting child rights so far after signing the UNCRC. 

Bangladesh has achieved significant success in shirking newborn and maternal mortality rates, according to Save the Children. 

The death rate of newborns has dropped from 87 to 34 per thousand and 82percent of children are completing primary education. 

In October, Save the Children arranged a selfie video contest with the participation of children from across the country.
