Labour Court Orders Yunus to Appear on Feb 6

A Dhaka court has ordered Nobel laureate and Grameen Communications Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yunus and three others to testify in the case on Feb 6 for breaching labor laws.

The three others are Grameen Communications Managing Director Nazneen Sultana and Deputy General Manager Gauri Shankar and Director A Hai Khan.

Dhaka's Third Labour Court Judge Rakibul Islam passed the order after hearing the case on Monday (Jan 13).

On Jan 5, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments filed the lawsuit.

According to the case documents, the Grameen Communications Department's inspection on 10 October last year found as many as ten violations of labor law.

Prior to that on Apr 30, the department found the same violations and issued a warning to fix those.

The violations include no appointment letters, photo IDs and service books for workers, working hours not being approved by the inspector, yearly and half-yearly returns not being filed, workers not cashing in half of the earned leave, the company’s appointment policies not approved by the inspector general, not maintaining logs for special duties during holidays and not forming a panel for safety issues.
