HC Moved against Disclosing Sex of Unborn Baby

A petition has been lodged with the High Court seeking a prohibition on the disclosure of the identity of an unborn child.

Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hassan, who filed the writ on Sunday (Jan 26), said it is likely to be heard by the M Enyetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman judges ' bench.

Hassan previously sent a legal notice to the Ministry of Health, Women and Children's Affairs Ministry and Ministry of Social Welfare on the matter on 1 Dec.

She asked the Ministries in the note to instruct the clinics and diagnostic centers to stop testing to confirm the baby's sex.

She told the media that many people in the country want sons because they believe that they can earn and carry the family forward.

“In this situation, if the sex is revealed during pregnancy and it doesn’t meet the expectations of the parents, it will have a negative effect on the physical and mental well-being of the expecting mother,” she said.

She added that pregnant mothers frequently suffer from depression, and it also impacts the baby for which disclosure of the gender should be prevented in Bangladesh.
