Vegetables Get Even Costlier As fish And Onion Prices Drop

Vegetables are being sold at high rates, but there is no noticeable scarcity on the market. Currently, no vegetable is available at less than Tk 50 per kg. Similarly, the costs of chicken and eggs stay just as high as before. However, the prices of onion, garlic, and fish have dropped a little over the week.

The information was found by media reporter while visiting different markets in the capital on Friday.

The price of potatoes is seen to be Tk 32-35 per kg. In addition, carrots are sold at Tk 80-90 per kg, tomatoes at Tk 50-60 per kg and cucumbers at Tk 40-50 per kg.

Besides vegetables, green chillies are sold at high prices. Pepper is sold on the market at Tk 120-160 per kg.

At the Mohammadpur Town Hall market, a vegetable vendor called Md Mohsin said that the availability of vegetables on the shop has been poor for the last two weeks. In many areas, rains and floods have destroyed vegetable fields. And the quality of vegetables in the yard is better. If this condition does not change, the price of vegetables will rise further, he said.

All kinds of chickens, ducks and eggs are being sold at the same high prices as last week in the markets of the capital. In these markets, broiler chickens are being sold at Tk 160 to 165 per kg, red layer chickens at Tk 240 to 250, white layer chickens at Tk 200 to 210, golden chickens at Tk 270 to 290 per kg and domestic chickens at Tk 600 per kg. Sobhan, a chicken seller in Rayer Bazar, said the supply of chickens as well has been low in the market for more than a month. Several farms have been closed due to corona. For those who have just started, their chickens have not yet hit the market. So, prices are not falling in the wholesale markets due to the inadequate supply.

In the meanwhile, eggs are being sold at a high price in the continuity of the last week. Red eggs are sold at Tk 105 to 110 per dozen, domestic chicken eggs at Tk 160 to 170, golden chicken eggs at Tk 140, duck eggs at Tk 125 to 130 and 100 pieces of quail eggs at Tk 200 to 220 per dozen.
