Khaleda Have to Apply to Govt to Extend Release

BNP chief Khaleda Zia will have to apply to the government for seeking an extension of the executive order which released her from jail, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

The top law officer came up with the statement as Khaled Zia was released for a period of six months which will expire on September 24.

''BNP chairperson was released upon the government’s executive order for six months. The tenure is going to expire on September 24. If Khaleda Zia would like to seek extension, she will have to apply for the same,'' he told reporters on Monday.

Khaleda, who is facing 37 cases, has already secured bail in 35. She is convicted in graft cases involving Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust fund embezzlement.

On February 18, 2018, a Dhaka court sentenced her to imprisonment for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust case sending her to jail.

A Dhaka court, October 29 same year, sentenced BNP chairperson to imprisonment for seven years of rigorous imprisonment in Zia Charitable Trust case.

Later, High Court hiked jail term of Khaleda Zia in orphanage case to 10 years following a petition filed by the state lawyers.

Khaleda filed bail petitions in various cases on health ground but the apex court did not grant.  The court sought medical reports which Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) furnished. The court directed the jail and other authorities concerned to ensure her better treatment following jail code and other legal procedures.

Relatives and party leaders preferred her release for receiving treatment elsewhere as per their choice, which the state counsels termed, not covered by the law.

Finally, the government considered her release after the country was beset with the corona problem.

Exercising its authority given by section 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the government released the BNP chairperson for a period of six months.

Serving jail term for two years and 16 days, she got released on March 25 this year.
