Flooding Inundates Vast Areas of Southern Region

Flooding has engulfed large parts of the southern part of the country, leaving hundreds of residents trapped as the floodwater recedes from the northern regions.

Many low-lying areas in the southern region have been flooded by a 2-5 foot tidal surge coupled with heavy rain, according to a bulletin from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

Southern Districts — Barishal, Bhola, Borguna, Jalkhathi, Patuakhali, Khulna and Bagerhat, are experiencing a short-lived flood, the FFWC bulletin added.

The water levels of the rivers in the Brahmaputra drainage fell on Saturday, while the rivers in the Ganges basin stayed steady. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna River network is experiencing a deteriorating pattern and may intensify over the next 48 hours.

The Ganges-Padma River system remained steady and this pattern can continue over the next 24 hours, according to the FFWC Bulletin.

Over the next 24 hours, moderate to severe rains may occur in the south-west and south-central regions, according to the bulletin, adding water levels to the rivers in the regions may increase during this period.

The water levels of the major rivers in the upper Meghna basin of the north-eastern area are decreasing and will continue to decline over the next 48 hours.

The flood situation in the low-lying regions of Manikganj, Rajbari and Faridpur is expected to stay stable in the next 24 hours.

There is a risk of moderate to severe rainfall in the south-west and south-central coastal regions during the next 24 hours, which is why the rivers in this area rising rise during this period.

The water rates of several rivers in the Ganges basin tend to swell owing to the onrush of hilly upstream water and strong precipitation in the upper catchments.

Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge, Talbaria and Goalunda Points of the Ganges Basin this morning display an upward rise in water rates.

The water level of the Ganges River grew five cm at the point of Pankha in Chapainawabganj, two cm at the point of Rajshahi, and four cm at the points of Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria in the last 24 hours at 9:00 a.m. on the day.

The Ganges was flowing 169 cm, 185 cm, 106 cm and 78 cm below the danger levels at the points of Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria, while the Padma water level increased by three cm at the point of Goalundo. At the stage this morning, the river was running 29 cm above the danger mark.

Meanwhile, the low-lying parts of Koyra and Paikgachha upazilas under the Khulna district have been flooding with tidal waves, leaving thousands of residents marooned.

Floodwater reached the cyclone Amphan-hit villages in Koyra and Paikgachha upazilas, creating a breach of the line. People of the villages are suffering a lot.

The water levels in the Shibsa, Kapotakkho and Koyra rivers in Khulna district rose due to strong tidal surge and as a result, many fresh areas of the district have been inundated.
