Major Rivers in B'putra Basin Mark Both Rise and Fall

Water levels of major rivers marked both rise and fall following moderate to heavy monsoon rains in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am on Sunday (today) without causing any flood situation.

Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system might show a steady situation during the next 24 hours in the river basin.

A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB said the recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am today were 53mm at Jalpaiguri and 40mm at Dhubri points in the upstream of the northwestern Indian states.

However, the moderate to heavy rainfalls recorded during the same period were 92mm Chilmari, 62mm at Rangpur, 60mm at Dalia and 58mm at Gaibandha points in the Brahmaputra basin.

Water levels of the Brahmaputra marked rise by 11cm at Noonkhawa and 6cm at Chilmari, Ghagot fell by 2cm at Gaibandha, Teesta fell by 5cm at Dalia and rose by 10cm at Kawnia and Dharla rose by 13cm at Kurigram points during the last 24 hours.

Besides, water levels of the Jamuna marked rise by 2cm at Fulchhari in Gaibandha and fall by 9cm at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur, 7cm at Sariakandi in Bogura, 8cm at Kazipur and 13cm at Sirajganj points in the Brahmaputra basin during the period.

However, water levels of all major rivers were flowing well below their respective danger marks (DM) at all points in the basin at 9am today.

The Dharla was flowing 28cm below the DM at Kurigram, Brahmanpara by 145cm at Noonkhawa and 112cm at Chilmari, Teesta by 35cm at Dalia and 36cm at Kawnia and Ghaghot below the DM by 133cm at Gaibandha points at 9 am today.

Besides, the Jamuna was flowing below the DM by 109cm at Fulchhari, 123cm at Bahadurabad, 83cm at Sariakandi, 68cm at Kazipur and 83cm at Sirajganj points in the Brahmaputra basin at 9 am today.

Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh told BSS that no flood situation is prevailing anywhere in Rangpur zone and ruled out the possibility of another flood in the Brahmaputra basin this season.

Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Zakir Hossain said the district administrations and BWDB authorities are monitoring the situation in Rangpur division where people are continuing normal daily life.
