Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said that Bangladesh has not got any offer to join the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) led by the United States.

"Chinese envoy represents his country. So he expressed their strategy. They can do so. But he said it in advance as none approached us for joining Quad yet," the minister said in a briefing when reporters asked him about the Chinese envoy's remark on not joining the anti-China alliance, reports media.

On Monday, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming said Bangladesh should not join Quad and Dhaka's relations with Beijing will "substantially get damaged" if it joins it.

He termed Quad as a military alliance aiming against China's resurgence and its relationship with neighbouring countries.

Earlier last month, the issue of joining Quad surfaced during Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe's visit to Bangladesh.

Fenghe requested Bangladesh not to join Quad during his meeting with President Abdul Hamid.

Afterwards, Abdul Momen told media that Bangladesh has no intention of joining any military alliance.

"We are against joining any military alliance but we are in favour of a free and open Indian Ocean. Bangladesh wants free trade through sea routes," the minister said.

What is Quad

Quad is a strategic coalition comprising the US, Japan, Australia and India, formed to tackle China's presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
