The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) started construction of three feet walls on both sides of the road in Dahagram Tinbigha Corridor in Patgram Upazila of Lalmonirhat. However, on Wednesday (September 8) at 9:30 am, their plan was thwarted by the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB). If that wall was built, the movement of Bangladeshis would be narrowed.

It is learned that the road of Tinbigha corridor is 178 meters long and 85 meters wide from Panbari area of Kuchalibari union of Patgram upazila to Dahagram union. On October 19, 2011, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held talks with the Government of India to use the road 24 hours a day. Bangladeshis have been using the road continuously since then.

One week ago, BSF members brought construction materials including bricks, sand, cement and iron rods to the Indian part of the Tinbigha corridor. Since September 5, about 12-15 construction workers have been digging pits on both sides of the road since morning to repair the road.

On September 5, Panbari Company Commander of 51 BGB Battalion Jahabul Islam wanted to know about the construction work of the corridor from the BSF. The BSF said, “The road will be renovated and beautified as per the instructions of the higher authorities. There will be no problem in the movement of ordinary people.”

In two days, holes were dug in about half of the road and three feet high walls were built on the east-south side of the road. This would disrupt the movement of Bangladeshis. Realizing the matter, BGB members obstructed the work on Wednesday morning.

Even after that, the BSF instructed the construction workers to work. The BGB members in charge strongly protested. At one stage, tension has created at the border. Later at the spot, Bikash Roy, Company Commander of Tinbigha Camp of Indian 45 Raninagar BSF Battalion and Jahabul Islam, Panbari Company Commander of 51 BGB Battalion of Bangladesh discussed with the concerned members. Both sides agreed to stop working.
