Second Channel of Bangabandhu Tunnel Will Be Opened on Friday

Planning Minister MA Mannan said construction of the second channel of the Bangabandhu tunnel under the Karnafuli river would be completed on Friday (October 8). Its entrance will be opened on this day.

He said the entrance of the second channel of Bangabandhu Tunnel, one of the mega and dream projects, will be opened on Friday night. The entrance of a channel had already been opened. Construction of the two channels will be completed by midnight on Friday.

He told reporters after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (October 5).

"We came to know at the ECNEC meeting that the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel (Karnafuli Tunnel) was supposed to be opened in December but it is being opened next Friday," he said. This is very good news. It will be very exciting for the younger generation.

He said opening the tunnel ahead of time would save some money. The second entrance of the channel will be opened at midnight on Friday. However, transport will not be able to travel through here right now. It will take a few more days to complete.

The Bangabandhu Tunnel will be connected to Anwara from Patenga in Chattogram with a depth of 45 meters in the water level of Karnafuli river. The construction of the 3.43 km long tunnel is being funded by China at a cost of $705 million. The Bangladesh government is bearing the cost of land acquisition and administration.
