3 Killed over UP Election Violence in Narsingdi

Three people have been killed in a clash between two groups over the occupation of the Union Parishad (UP) polling station at Banshgari, a remote char area in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.

These isolated incidents took place in Banshgari area on Thursday (November 11) morning. At present there is panic in the whole area. However, despite the casualties in the violence, voting is going on in Banshgari.

Nine people were killed in the violence centered on the second round of UP elections in Narsingdi.

The deceased have been identified as Salauddin Mia, 45, son of Hikim Mia of Banshgari village, Dulal Mia, 45, son of Siraj Mia of the same area and Jahangir, 27, son of Haq Mia.

Among them, Salauddin and Jahangir are supporters of Ratul Hasan Zakir, the independent chairman candidate of Rashgari Union. And Dulal is a supporter of the current chairman and boat candidate Ashraful Haque.

Police and locals said that there was a dispute between Ashraful, the candidate for the boat symbol, and Zakir Hossain, the independent candidate of the rival Awami League, for the mobile phone symbol.

On Wednesday (November 10) evening, there was a chase between the two groups and a cocktail explosion. The clashes continued throughout the night. The young man was shot dead in the morning.

Yusuf Mia, in-charge of the Banshgari police camp, said one person was killed in a clash between the two groups. However, the voting of that union is going on.

According to family members of the deceased, Salauddin used to drive a CNG-powered autorickshaw in Konabari area of ​​Gazipur. He returned home on Wednesday night to cast his ballot. He died before voting. They allege that Ashraful Haque's men came to the house and shot dead Salauddin.

Narsingdi Sadar Police Station OC (investigation) Harun Ar-Rashid said the bodies of two people were brought to Narsingdi Sadar and District Hospital in the incident.

Meanwhile, a massive clash took place at Karimganj Government Primary School in Amirganj Union of Raipura Upazila of the district around 11am. One Saiful is sustained head injury and several others were also injured. Upon receiving the news, the police came and brought the situation under control.
