Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today said election
schedules for more 1,000 union parishads (UPs) under the 5th phase will be
announced soon.
"The Election Commission (EC) has a plan of holding elections to
all UPs which tenures have been expired within this year," he told
reporters at a press conference at the media center of the Nirbachan Bhaban in
the city's Agargaon area.
Noting that the UP election is being held across the country in 2021,
the CEC said elections to 369 UPs have already been held on June 21 and
September 20 under the first phase while elections to 833 UPs were held on
November 11 under the second phase.
Besides, polls to 2,007 UPs will be held on November 28 under the third
phase while elections to 840 UPs are scheduled to be held on December 23 under
the fourth phase, Huda said.
He said voting took place at 8,472 centers of 833 UPs across the
country under the second phase while a total of 41,218 candidates vied in
different posts in the polls.
A total of 17 registered political parties and a large number of
independent candidates took part in the polls, the CEC said, adding a that total
of 3,310 contested for the chairman post, 28,747 vied for general member post
and 1,161 contested for the reserved seat (women).
Voter turnout in the polls was 74.22 percent, he said.
Mentioning that violence and losing lives centering the polls is not
expected, Huda said voting was suspended at 16 centers as the situation went
beyond Presiding Officers' control, which is only 0.18 percent of the total
voting centers.
Election Commissioners Md Rafiqul Islam and Brigadier General (Retd) Shahadat
Hossain Chowdhury and secretary of the EC Secretariat were present at the press
conference.
