The government has made 14 days of institutional quarantine mandatory for all travellers arriving in Bangladesh from seven African countries, reports media.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh came up with the fresh announcement in a circular on Thursday, following the outbreak of New Covid-19 variant Omicron.

The instruction will come into effect from 12am on December 4 until further notice.

According to the circular, all incoming passengers who originated/transited/visited Botswana, Eswatini, Ghana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe within the last 14 days, will have to complete a mandatory 14-day institutional quarantine at government-nominated hotels at passengers’ own expenses.

“RT-PCR test, at passengers’ own expenses, will be carried out on 7th and 14th day of the quarantine. Depending on the RT-PCR test result on 7th day of the quarantine, Covid positive passengers will be separated for further isolation to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and the Covid negative passengers will continue their institutional quarantine until 14 days.

“Depending on the RT-PCR test result on 14th day of the quarantine, Covid negative passengers will be released,” it said.

Besides, proof of hotel booking in Bangladesh will be presented by the passengers during check-in from the mentioned countries and the airlines’ representatives will verify it before issuing the boarding pass for Bangladesh, the circular said.

In addition, airlines will provide passengers’ passport details and address along with their contact numbers in Bangladesh to the health department, it said.

The circular added that incoming passengers, except children below 12 years old, from all destinations will mandatorily possess RT-PCR based Covid-19 negative certificate. The test will be done within 48 hours of the flight departure.

On November 26, the World Health Organization declared the B.1.1.529 variant, first detected in southern Africa, to be a variant of concern and renamed it Omicron.

Dozens of countries, meanwhile, have imposed restrictions on travel from different African states.
