After Dhaka, half fare will be charged for students in public transport in all metropolitan cities, including Chittagong. Khandaker Enayet Ullah, secretary general of the central committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, has announced that half fare will be implemented next Saturday (December 11).

He said that the students have been protesting in the streets for a long time demanding half rent. We have implemented half fare in Dhaka city on 30th November. Following this, the half fare will be effective in Chittagong and other cities from next Saturday (December 11).

He made the announcement at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club's Engineer Abdul Khaleq Auditorium at 11 am on Sunday (December 5).

Enayet Ullah said that half fare will be applicable not only in Chittagong but also in other cities of the country which have city service. In this case students have to show ID card with picture.

He said half fare is effective from 7 am to 8 pm. Half fare will not be effective on public holidays, weekly holidays, seasonal holidays of educational institutions. Half fare will be effective only in Chittagong city, not outside. This decision will also be effective where city services are available.

The Secretary General said that in response to the demand of the students, we have already introduced half fare in the city service in the capital. 10 monitoring teams have been set up in Dhaka to see if the students can pay half the fare. Today I am announcing the introduction of half fare in Chittagong too. This decision will be effective from next Saturday. Before that, the employers will sit down with the workers and decide what to do.

“Students are our children,” he said. We have implemented half fare by respecting the demands of the students. So I hope they go back to their educational institutions.
