Today marks Democracy Liberation Day. The Ershad government fell on December 6, 1990 in the face of a mass uprising in the final stages of the long nine-year anti-dictatorship movement.

On that day, according to the outline of the three alliances, the then President Hussein Muhammad Ershad was forced to hand over power to a non-partisan, caretaker government.

Different political parties and socio-cultural organizations have organized separate programs on the occasion of the day.

In a message on the occasion of Democracy Liberation Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed heartfelt greetings to the people who are fighting for democracy.

She said the Awami League has played a responsible role in safeguarding democracy and suffrage in the last three decades. Our government has been working relentlessly since 2009 to stop the culture of impunity and institutionalize democracy in the country. We are committed to upholding democracy, the constitution, the rule of law and human rights. Fifteenth amendment to the constitution has blocked the way for illegal seizure of power.

The Prime Minister said the anti-independence and anti-democracy clique is still active and conspiring in various ways. Let us strengthen the foundation of democracy by resisting all conspiracies against democracy and the country and build a hunger-poverty-free and happy-prosperous golden Bangladesh of the dream of the father of the nation by working together for the development of the country and the welfare of the people.
