In a bribery
and money laundering case, a court sentenced suspended Sylhet range Deputy
Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Partha Gopal Banik to eight years in prison.
On Sunday, in
the presence of Partha, Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4
issued the decision.
Although the
sentence was handed on two distinct charges, it will be served consecutively.
Earlier this
year, on December 27, the court set today as the day for delivering the verdict
following the conclusion of the prosecution and defense closing arguments.
Md
Salahuddin, Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) main
office, filed a charge sheet against Partha on August 24, last year.
The
charge-sheet was accepted by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayesh
on August 31.
The ACC
arrested Partha, who worked at Sylhet Central Jail, on July 28, 2019, after
recovering Taka 80 lakh from his North Green Road flat in Dhanmondi, the
capital.
During his
arrest, Partha claimed that the car he was driving and keeping in the parking
space he owned belonged to a friend. Partha said that his mother-in-law had
given him Taka 30 lakh and that he had earned Taka 50 lakh during his years of
work.
On July 29,
2019, the anti-graft body filed a case against Partha.
