Govt Opts Moderna Instead Of Pfizer as Booster Dose

The Health Directorate has directed that Moderna Vaccine be given instead of Pfizer as the booster dose.

This information was given in a circular signed by Dr. Shamsul Haque, Member Secretary, Covid-19 Vaccine Management Task Force Committee of the Directorate's Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) today (Thursday, January 13).

The third dose (booster) vaccine is being given to people over 60 years of age and frontline fighters in the country to prevent coronavirus infection. From the beginning until now, Pfizer has been administrated as the booster dose.

The directive states that the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine should be given instead of Pfizer as the third dose subject to vaccination at all levels of the country in the Covid-19 vaccination program. In this case, the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine is only recommended for both school and college going students (12-17 year olds) and for those who have received the Pfizer vaccine as the first dose.

With the kind approval of the Director General of the Health Directorate, the letter has been sent to all the Divisional Health Directors, Directors of Government Medical College Hospitals (All), All Government General Hospitals, Deputy Directors / Supervisors / Superintendents of District Headquarters Hospitals, Civil Surgeons and others concerned.

Pfizer, Modernna, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm and Sinovac are now being administrated in the country as first and second doses. However, the National Immunization Technical Committee-Nightag has recommended Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca as booster doses.

As of Wednesday, 5,40,526 people across the country had been given booster doses, according to the Department of Health. Among them, the highest number of 2 lakh 70 thousand 462 people got the Pfizer vaccine. In addition, 2,46,330 Oxford-AstraZeneca and 22,734 Moderna vaccines were given as booster doses.
