Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak Calls On US Ambassador to Dhaka Earl R. Miller
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak said the US government had imposed the ban on law enforcement officers in
Bangladesh not as a punishment, rather as a warning. The United States has praised
Bangladesh for successfully tackling militants. In their view, human rights have
been violated in some cases.
The Agriculture
Minister was responding to a question from reporters after a farewell meeting
between US Ambassador to Dhaka Earl R. Miller at the Secretariat on Sunday
(January 16).
The two sides
discussed agriculture, the economy, global and regional issues, and the recent
US sanctions. Megan Francis, Agricultural Attache at the US Embassy, was
present.
The agriculture
minister said the US government attaches great importance to human rights.
Noting that the United States has praised the success of the crackdown on
militants, the agriculture minister said that in their (USA) opinion, human
rights have been violated in some cases. It needs to improve. He said it was
very sad to consider Bangladesh with North Korea and Myanmar.
Regarding the human
rights situation, the Agriculture Minister said Bangladesh has tackled
militancy strictly. In some places, law enforcement may have made mistakes, for
which 190 RAB officers have been punished. Citing the ambassador, the minister
said he would return to the United States to discuss the matter with a higher
level of government so that the ban could be lifted soon.
U.S. Ambassador
Earl R. Miller said there is a deep relationship between Bangladesh and the USA
in the field of agriculture. Agricultural trade between the two countries has
grown significantly. Bangladesh is now the 26th largest market for agricultural
products in the USA.
