The government has
approved 10 new varieties of paddy for cultivation in Boro season. 2 inbreds
invented by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), 1 inbred invented by Bangladesh
Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), 1 inbred invented by BRAC among
private organizations and 6 hybrid varieties of other organizations have been
registered and released.
The approval was
given at the 106th meeting of the National Seed Board held on Tuesday (January
18) afternoon in the conference room of the Ministry of Agriculture under the
chairmanship of Agriculture Secretary and Chairman of the National Seed Board
Mohammad Saidul Islam.
The Agriculture
Secretary said that the yield of hybrids is high. The Ministry of Agriculture
is now focusing on hybrid varieties and increasing plantations to produce more
from less land. In the meantime, about 218 varieties have been registered. From
now on, importance will be given to the registration of varieties that will
benefit the farmers in a more quality and long lasting manner.
According to a
press release issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, the released BRRI rice-101
invented by BRRI is resistant to bacterial burns and BRRI rice-102 is rich in
zinc. In the trial, the average yield of BRRI Dhan-101 was 7.72 tons per
hectare and that of BRRI Dhan-102 was 8.11 tons. Zinc content in BRRI Paddy-102
Paddy is 25.5 mg / kg. The average yield per hectare was found to be 7.64 tons
in paddy-25 trials without inventions. Its rice is very long and thin, the rice
is white, crisp and delicious. Lifespan is 145 days.
Among the
non-government organizations, the average yield of BRAC Dhan-2 invented by BRAC
is 7.36 tons per hectare. The grains are thin, fragrant and premature. Lifespan
is 139 days. In addition, the results of 8 hybrid rice of other private
companies have been reviewed and registered.
The meeting was
attended by Director General (Seed) of the Ministry Abdullah Sajjad, Additional
Secretary Kamala Ranjan Das, Executive Chairman of BARC Dr Sheikh Mohammad
Bakhtiyar, Chairman of BADC AFM Hayatullah, Director General of BRRI Shahjahan
Kabir and Director General of Bangladesh Atomic Agriculture Research Board Mirza
Mofazzal Islam and other Seed Board members were present at the meeting.
