Five people have been killed in two upazilas of Sunamganj in
nor'wester thunderstorm. The tragic incident took place at two separate places
in Sullah and Jagannathpur upazilas of the district on Thursday (April 14).
Mother Mousumi Begum (35), daughter Mahina Akhter (4) and
son Hossain Miah (1) were killed when a tree fell on their house at Sulemanpur
village under Patli union of Jagannathpur upazila around 4 am today.
According to police and local sources, Harun Mia was a
caretaker at the house of Bulu Mia, a London expatriate from Solemanpur. He
lived in a tin-shed house. When nor'wester started this morning, a gab tree and
mango tree fell on his house. The mother, daughter and son inside the house
were seriously injured. After rescuing them, they were taken to Jagannathpur
Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared the three dead.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Jagannathpur Police Station Mizanur
Rahman confirmed the matter.
On the other hand, Maqbool Khan (45) and his son Masud Khan
(12), residents of Sullah village in Sullah Sadar Union of Sullah Upazila, went
to fetch hay for cows from the haor near their house. At that time they were
severely injured by lightning.
Later, the locals rescued them from the haor and took them
to the nearby Ajmeriganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor
declared them dead.
Sullah Police Station OC Mohammad Aminul Islam confirmed the
matter and said that the inquest into the bodies of the father and son is underway.
They will be handed over to their families later.
