The High Court has handed over a 19-year-old Canadian (Bangladeshi
descent) girl, who has been forcefully detained for 10 months at her parents'
house in the North Mugda of the capital, to her country's government
representatives.
A High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice SM
Moniruzzaman passed the order on Sunday (April 18).
Barrister Sara Hossain was in favor of the writ petition.
The girl's father was present in the court. Representatives of the Canadian High
Commission were also present.
On April 5, the High Court directed to produce a 19-year-old
Canadian girl who had been forcefully detained for 10 months at her parents'
house in the North Mugda of the capital. Mugda police and her parents were
asked to produce the girl before court. At the same time, the court issued a rule asking why
it would not be illegal to detain a 19-year-old girl for 10 months without her
consent.
According to the writ petition, the young woman was born in
Canada. She is a Canadian citizen by birth and studied at a university in
Canada. Her parents also lived in Canada. 10 months ago her parents brought her
here saying they would take her on a trip to Bangladesh. The young woman then
tried to return to Canada but was not allowed to do so.
According to the writ petition, the girl's mobile phone was
snatched from her and her grandmother and mother detained her in their house.
At one point, the young woman told the Canadian government and the Canadian
High Commission in Dhaka on a land phone that she had been forcibly placed under
house arrest. The young woman expressed her desire to return to Canada.
