The United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) of Humanitarian Affairs in Dhaka called for the elimination of workplace security deficit across the country in the wake of the BM container depot blast at Sitakunda in Chattogram.

The UNRC said in a statement on Monday (June 7).

The United Nations is saddened and shocked by the loss of life in the BM container depot fire and explosion in Chittagong, the UNRC office said in a statement. The United Nations extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the 41 civilians killed and 9 fire service members and the hundreds injured.

The United Nations has said in a statement that the "safety of the industry and the organization and its effective implementation must be worked out together".

The United Nations has called on all parties to use all available force to address the security situation in the country. In this case, the United Nations will cooperate to build a safe Bangladesh for all.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Forum, Bangladesh, in a statement on the Sitakunda blast, said that due to the existing culture of impunity, accountability for previous incidents could not be confirmed. That is why these terrible man-made disasters are happening one after another.

The human rights group called for speedy and impartial investigation to identify those responsible, ensure legal punishment, and provide equal compensation to the families of each person killed in accordance with the ILO Convention, and speedy trial of all fires and explosions that have occurred so far.

In a separate Facebook post, British MP Rushnara Ali and British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Chatterton Dickson, the US and German embassies and various individuals and organizations, including the Pakistani government, expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
