A number of houses of the Hindu
community were attacked and set on fire in Lohagara, Narail, on charges of
'insulting religion' on Facebook. The incident took place in the Saha
neighborhood of Dighlia village of the upazila on Friday evening (July 15).
It is known that the complaint of
'insulting religion' was raised on the Facebook status of a local college
student. Tension spread over the issue after Jumma prayers on Friday (July 15).
After that, the angry people started a protest demanding the arrest and trial
of the student. By afternoon, the situation went out of control.
At one stage, the angry people
vandalized the houses of Tarun Saha, Dilip Saha and Palash Saha in Sahapara and
set fire Govinda Saha's house. A tin house with two rooms was burnt.
Apart from this, the protesters
vandalized the chair and sound box of Sahapara temple. Later, a large number of
police and RAB went and brought the situation under control.
Prabhat Kumar Ghosh, a former
member of Ward No. 8 of Dighlia Union, said that angry mobs set fire to houses,
vandalized and attacked temples due to controversial comments on Facebook.
Superintendent of Police Praveer
Kumar Roy said that law and order forces are working to control the situation.
The matter of blasphemy is being investigated. Legal action will be taken
against the culprits. For now the situation is normal.
