Independent mayoral candidate Qayyum Shahriar Zahedee Hijol has
been elected unofficially in the Jhenaidah municipal polls.
Election Returning Officer Oliul Islam announced the result on
Sunday (September 11) night.
Qayyum Shahriar Zahedee Hijol got 25 thousand 753 votes with the coconut tree symbol. His closest rival Abdul Khalek, candidate of the boat
symbol nominated by Awami League, got 18 thousand 539 votes.
Earlier, the polling went on uninterruptedly from 8 am. Voting
was conducted through EVMs in 47 centers of 9 wards of the municipality amid
tight security. Polling ended without any untoward incident or complaint.
The last election of Jhenaidah Municipality was held on
March 13, 2011. Although the term was due to expire in April 2016, the
municipal elections were postponed due to boundary dispute cases.
