US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the United States is concerned about the Bangladesh government's systematic and pervasive oppression of journalists and media personalities who attempt to hold the government accountable.
Matthew Miller said these things on the verified Facebook page of the US Embassy in Dhaka on September 14.
The caption posted in Bengali along with the video of Matthew Miller's speech said, As we have said before, we believe journalists play an essential role in a democracy. Their news exposes corruption.
According to Matthew Miller, the right to know all information that affects public life is protected. Journalists need to be able to make people aware of the problems that common people face in their daily lives.
He said, "The way you make me accountable for what I say every day, they should also be able to make elected representatives accountable." It is imperative for them to continue working without harassment, violence, or intimidation.
He also said that we are concerned about the Bangladesh government's systematic and widespread persecution of journalists and media personalities who seek to bring the government to account.
