HC Postpones Jhenaidah-1 By-Election

The High Court has postponed the by-election of Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency to be held on June 5. Today (Monday, May 6), the High Court bench of Justice Md. Zakir Hossain gave the order.

Lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub was in favor of the application in the court. He said that the court has postponed the election for 21 days. And the election petition will be heard from next Sunday.

Lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub said that a sheet given by the returning officer for the January 7 election showed 49 percent voter turnout. It can be seen that Nazrul Islam Dulal, the independent candidate of the district Awami League, got the highest number of votes. But later the boat's candidate Abdul Hai was declared the winner. Against this, Nazrul Islam filed an election petition in the High Court. On February 1, the High Court issued a notice to the defendants and suspended the gazette. Later, however, the Appellate Division stayed the gazette suspension order. In between, Abdul Hai passed away. Now the rule is that the applicant is declared the winner if the winning candidate dies. Without that, a new election date was announced. Now the High Court has postponed this election for 21 days. He has fixed the hearing on the election petition from Sunday.

The deadline for filing nomination papers in the election is May 7, selection of nomination papers is May 9, appeals against selection are on May 10-14, and appeals are disposed of on May 15. 

Last date for withdrawal of candidature is 16 May and allotment of symbols is 17 May. Regional officer of Khulna region will perform the duty of returning officer.

On March 16, the Member of Parliament of Jhenaidah-1 Constituency, the freedom fighter Abdul Hai died. The by-election was scheduled to be held on June 5 in this vacant seat.

In the 12th National Assembly elections, Abdul Hayee won with huge votes from Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency with boat symbol. In the January 7 election, Abdul Hayee was elected by getting 95,674 votes.

Meanwhile, Md. Naib Ali Zoardar has become the nominated candidate of Awami League in the by-election of Jhenaidah-1 constituency. He is former upazila chairman and district Awami League member.
