Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said that Bangladesh police are collaborating closely with the Kolkata Police and Indian authorities regarding the death of Md Anwarul Azim (Anar), lawmaker for Jhenaidah-4 and president of Kaliganj upazila Awami League.

"The news of Anar's death has not been officially confirmed by the relevant Indian police authorities through our embassy. We understand that they are investigating," the IGP said at a press briefing in the capital on Wednesday.

When asked if Anar was killed, the IGP responded: "We are working on it. Once we get any information, we will disclose it."

One of the two arrested is Amanullah.

In an event at Badda in the capital this morning, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said in response to questions from journalists that the Bangladesh Police is working with the Kolkata Police in the case of Anwarul Azim. We will let you know if there is any progress.

Anwarul Azim's private secretary Abdur Rauf told "We have learned about the murder through the media. But it is not possible to know anything officially."

On behalf of police, local media Kolkata 24 reported that Anwar's last location was found in Bihar by tracking his mobile phone. His phone was switched off on May 14.

According to the media report, MP Annar visited a house in Newtown on May 13. He was killed in that house.

The house where he was killed in Newtown is a rented house owned by an excise officer. Several people including women were present in this house on the day of the murder. But after Anwar's mysterious death, everyone fled from India.

According to Awami League sources, the MP often visits India for treatment, and Kolkata is familiar to him. Some of his acquaintances are also here.

An official of the consulate said that the MP entered West Bengal through the Darshana border on May 12, on the same day, went to the house of a friend named Gopal Biswas in Baranagar. Two days later, on May 14, he left his friend's house, saying he would try to return the same day; otherwise, he would return the next day. However, since Azim did not return as informed, Gopal Biswas filed a missing case with Kolkata police.

According to GD information, Gopal mentioned in the GD that he has had family relations with Anwarul Azim for 25 years. Anwarul Azim didn’t return to Gopal Biswas’s home that evening. Later, a text was sent to Gopal from Anwarul’s WhatsApp saying he was going to Delhi for a special task. He would call Gopal upon reaching there and no need to call him.

Later, on 15 May at 11:21 am, Gopal received another text on his WhatsApp from Anwarul’s number which stated, “I have reached. I am with the VIPs. There is no need to call me.”

The same text was sent from Anwarul’s number to his family members and his personal secretary also. However, on 16 May, Anwarul called his personal secretary Abdur Rauf, but he missed the call. Later, he called back Anwarul Azim several times. But there was no response.

The next day Anwarul's daughter called Gopal Biswas and said she could not contact his father. Following that Gopal contacted Anwarul’s acquaintances, but they didn’t know his whereabouts.
