Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) Additional Commissioner Harun Or Rashid has conducted a re-enactment of the murder of Bangladeshi lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar by ‘butcher’ Jihad Howladar in Kolkata. A three-member team from Bangladesh led by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) Additional Commissioner Harun Or Rashid went to Kolkata on Sunday (May 26) to investigate MP Anar’s murder. Officers of the West Bengal CID and New Town Police Station were present at that time.
A three-member team from Bangladesh led by Harun went to Kolkata on Sunday (May 26) to investigate Anar’s murder. They visited Sanjeeva Gardens in New Town at around 10:45am on Monday (May 27).
Harun interrogated Jihad in the flat where MP Anar is suspected to have been killed. The interrogation and subsequent re-enactment took about 90 minutes.
Jihad showed how Anar’s body was chopped into pieces after the murder. The detective team then took Jihad to Bagjola Canal, 7km from the murder scene, sources said.
“We went to the spot twice with Jihad. We also visited Bagjola Canal, where MP Anar’s body parts were reportedly discarded. We hope to recover them soon,” Harun said.
Yesterday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's DB team, led by its chief Harun Or Rashid, took Jihad to the flat in Kolkata's New Town where the crime was committed nearly two weeks ago.
That time investigators from India and Bangladesh revealed that Azim entered the flat at 2:51pm on May 13 and was killed there within the next half an hour.
According to Jihad, the MP's body was lying in a bedroom for several hours.
"After sunset, four people moved his body to the toilet, and Jihad began dismembering it. The killers purchased a large quantity of cotton to clean up the bloodstains," said a West Bengal CID official requesting anonymity.
Cotton was also used to suppress the sound of chops, according to another CID source.
After vising the flat, the DB team along with Jihad went to a swamp at Polerhat in Kolkata. Jihad told investigators that he and his associates got off a taxi about a kilometre away from the swamp and walked there to dump the parts of the body.
Meanwhile the visiting detectives could not make any attempt to recover the parts due to incessant rain yesterday. They cross checked the information provided by suspect Amanullah alias Shimul Bhuiyan during the interrogation in Bangladesh, with Jihad in India.
Amanullah, an extremist leader from the Khulna-Jashore region, was in charge of the killing, said investigations. He is now on eight-day remand in DB custody.
It is stated that Azim went to Kolkata on May 12 and stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas's house for a night.
Sources say the killers split into two groups to discard Anar’s body. One team led by Jihad dumped body parts into Bagjola Canal. Another team, led by Faizul, discarded body parts somewhere on Jessore Road.
The detective team also searched around Jessore Road but found nothing. Besides, the weapons used in the murder are yet to be found.
Bangladeshi investigators are scheduled to stay in Kolkata for five more days as there has been hardly any headway into the investigation.
On May 22, India and Bangladesh police confirmed that the lawmaker was murdered.
