PM Wants To Sit With Quota Movement Protesters

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has invited the leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement for a discussion. She stated that the doors of Ganabhaban are open, and she wants to meet and listen to the protesters. She emphasized that she does not want conflict.

On Saturday (August 2), during a meeting with the central leaders of the Professional Coordination Council at Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister expressed her willingness to engage in dialogue with the student protesters. The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed the news.

On Sunday (August 4) at 4:30 PM, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with cultural workers at Ganabhaban.

Earlier, on Friday night, the Awami League held an emergency meeting at Ganabhaban regarding the ongoing situation. During this meeting, party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed that the general student protesters be treated with care and tolerance. Additionally, a three-member team from the Awami League was formed to coordinate and communicate with the anti-quota movement leaders, with instructions to include senior leaders from the 14-party alliance.

The emergency meeting included the party president as well as General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Presidium members Dr. Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Advocate Kamrul Islam, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Law Minister Anisul Huq, party Joint General Secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, A.F.M. Bahauddin Nasim, Dr. Dipu Moni, Organizational Secretary Mirza Azam, Education Minister Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Education State Minister Shamsun Nahar Chapa, Information State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, and Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, among others.

Leaders present at the meeting noted that discussions were held about the students' demands, and it was stated that the party agrees with their demands. The quota system has already been reformed, and a judicial investigation committee has been formed to investigate the incidents of injuries. The investigation will be conducted thoroughly. A team consisting of Awami League and 14-party leaders will discuss with the anti-quota movement coordinators and report back to the party president and alliance leader.

The leaders also mentioned that the meeting discussed the students' protests, noting that the Awami League has no objections to their demonstrations. However, caution was advised to prevent third parties from exploiting the situation. The party president instructed to handle the situation with patience and ensure that no unjust behavior is directed towards the students. Furthermore, the party's leaders and activists were advised to remain vigilant in their local areas.

Sources from Ganabhaban also confirmed that, aside from this meeting, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan had met with the Prime Minister the previous night, likely to update her on the overall situation and receive directives.
