The U.S. Embassy has issued a warning in light of the ongoing quota reform movement in Bangladesh. This message is intended to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens residing in Dhaka. Citizens are advised to consider returning to the United States if they feel unsafe. Due to the current situation, the embassy is providing limited routine consular services.
The warning was published on the U.S. Embassy's website today, Saturday, August 3.
According to the warning, protests, demonstrations, rallies, and gatherings related to the quota reform movement might continue in various locations across Bangladesh. The embassy anticipates that from Sunday, August 4, onwards, there could be further protests as part of a 'total non-cooperation' movement announced by the activists.
The security alert further advises U.S. citizens to exercise caution when moving around due to the potential for protests and government reactions. It also instructs U.S. citizens to be vigilant around any demonstrations and large gatherings.
The alert advises reviewing personal security plans, staying aware of local events and surroundings, and monitoring local news outlets to stay informed about what is happening.
Additionally, embassy staff are restricted to travel within diplomatic areas and are advised to avoid the Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan-2 after 12 PM.
