July Road Accidents: 487 Dead, 679 Injured Nationwide

In July, a report from the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) revealed that 487 people were killed and 679 injured in 452 road accidents across the country. Published on Thursday, the report indicates that among the fatalities, 63 were women and 71 were children. Motorcycle accidents accounted for 156 deaths, representing 32.03% of the total, with motorcycles involved in 39.15% of all accidents.

Pedestrian fatalities were 113, or 23.20% of the total deaths, while 68 people, or 13.96% of the total, were vehicle drivers and assistants.

The report also detailed that in July, there were six boat accidents resulting in eight deaths, 11 injuries, and three missing persons, while 19 rail accidents led to 18 deaths and six injuries.

The RSF compiled the report using data from nine national newspapers, seven online news portals, various electronic media sources, and its own records. Their analysis showed that 161 accidents (35.61%) occurred on national highways, 189 (41.81%) on regional roads, 62 (13.71%) on rural roads, 36 (7.96%) on city roads, and four (0.88%) in other locations.

Specifically, the Dhaka division saw 114 accidents (25.22% of the total), resulting in 116 deaths. In the capital alone, 28 road accidents led to 15 fatalities and 21 injuries.
