Floods Claim 18 Lives, Over 4.9 Million Affected

The country is being submerged by a devastating flood, the worst in recent memory, caused by continuous rainfall and upstream water flow, affecting 11 districts, including Cumilla, Feni, Chattogram, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Brahmanbaria. So far, 18 people have lost their lives in the ongoing flood, and more than 4.9 million people have been displaced in these 11 districts.

Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md. Kamrul Hasan provided this information at a press conference held on Saturday (August 24) at the Secretariat regarding the current flood situation. He also mentioned that the flood situation is gradually improving.

The Relief Secretary stated that the number of flood-affected districts remains 11. A total of 4,938,159 people have been impacted, with 944,548 families impacted.

So far, 18 people have died due to the floods, including 4 in Cumilla, 1 in Feni, 5 in Chittagong, 3 in Noakhali, 1 in Brahmanbaria, 1 in Lakshmipur, and 3 in Cox's Bazar.

He also mentioned that 3,527 shelters have been opened, providing refuge to 284,888 people. A total of 352 million takas have been allocated to the 11 flood-affected districts. Additionally, 20,150 tons of rice have been allocated, along with 15,000 packets of dry and other food items. Thirty-five million taka have been allocated for purchasing baby food, and another 35 million taka for purchasing cattle feed.

A 24-hour control room has already been officially set up at the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. The helpline number 0255101115 has been activated for information and assistance. In the flood-affected areas of Feni, Noakhali, Chattogram, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Habiganj, and Lakshmipur districts, the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and BGB are working in coordination with the district administration for rescue operations.
