Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md. Mainul Hasan has stated that those who used weapons during the protests, including members of the Awami League and Chhatra League, will also be brought under the law. He announced the initiation of efforts to recover illegal weapons.
He made this statement during a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Saturday morning (August 24).
Furthermore, he further mentioned that some VIPs have already been arrested and taken into remand. Those who provided financial support, advice, or made speeches or statements encouraging the student movement are being interrogated.
The DMP Commissioner said that some unprofessional and ambitious members of the police force have turned the entire department against the public. These individuals will be held accountable under the law.
Md. Mainul Hasan noted that 22 out of 50 police stations in the capital were burned during the anti-discrimination student movement, and many police officers were injured or killed. As a result, the force is still somewhat apprehensive. It will take some time for the police to fully recover.
He also mentioned plans to reorganize the entire force, stating that those who behaved unprofessionally will be identified and brought under the law.
When asked whether the appointment of officers from specific districts to key positions in the DMP would continue during his tenure, the Commissioner responded that he does not agree with such considerations. He emphasized that all members of the police force should work professionally, regardless of their district of origin, with the goal of creating a disciplined and professional police force.
