A 14-km-long gridlock formed on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway today (Friday), causing significant inconvenience to commuters and drivers.
The congestion began at 10am, stretching from Narayangnj’s Sanarpar to Langalbandh in Bandar Upazila.
Vehicles and people, including those carrying relief goods, remained stuck on the highway for hours. The usual ten-minute commute took more than an hour to complete.
Bus passenger Saiful Islam said, “I boarded the bus from Shimrail to go to Cumilla for an urgent job. I was stuck in the jam for a long time. So, I am going back home.”
Abdur Rahman, a bus driver, said, “The Dhaka-Chattogram highway has been experiencing severe traffic snarls for the past few days. The six-seven-minute journey from the Signboard to Shimrail took an hour.”
Kanchpur Highway Police’s in-charge Rezaul Haque said a vehicle broke down on the highway in the Langalbandh area at around 7am, causing traffic disruption. Besides, a large number of trucks have been moving with relief goods since night, resulting in the tailback.
“We removed the vehicle from the highway. Our teams are trying their best to resolve the traffic jam,” he added.
